Sunchokes and Livestock CowsWhile writing about Healthy Fats, I stumbled upon this recently published research on PFAs and other websites that wrote about it. Why pick on butter?

PFAs are Unhealthy Body Chemicals

Recent research has highlighted the presence of harmful chemicals in the human body, particularly focusing on “forever chemicals” known as PFAS (per-polyfluoroalkyl substances). These chemicals are linked to various health issues, including cancer, liver problems, thyroid issues, birth defects, kidney disease, and decreased immunity. A new study has revealed that certain foods, such as processed meat, are likely to increase levels of PFAS in the blood over time. Additionally, the study found that foods like tea, pork, candy, sports drinks, chips, and bottled water are among the drivers of high PFAS levels.

PFAS Research Information

Bottled water/beverages and fast foods were indicated as adding PFAS toxins to our body:

‘…we found that higher intakes of tea and several meats were associated with higher circulating blood PFAS concentrations, while higher intake of food prepared at home was associated with lower PFAS.’

‘We also found that higher intake of tea was associated with higher PFAS…’

‘…paper products are a major contamination source for PFAS and tea bags are primarily made of paper…’

‘…tea bags may be an exposure source for a variety of microplastics and nano plastics due to the brewing process with water at high temperatures…’

The study also pointed out that higher PFAS blood levels were observed among individuals who consumed more carryout or food prepared at restaurants. The research suggests that food packaging is a significant source of PFAS contamination, as evidenced by the finding that dishes made at home had lower PFAS concentrations compared to those prepared at restaurants. Furthermore, the study noted that butter likely increases PFAS levels, while consumption of nuts was associated with lower levels of the chemicals in the blood.

Why Mention Butter

I want to mention that there was no further mention of butter in the research but yet this article is putting it in the tagline title. WHY? I honestly do not know. Butter is better than the highly processed vegetable oils such as RBD (refined bleached and deodorized) canola, sunflower, and soybean oils, in my opinion but attempt to look for the research that says as much and you will be having to dive deep as there is so much out there that says the processed vegetable oils are better than better. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/feb/19/pfas-toxic-forever-chemicals-study#

In addition to PFAS, other harmful chemicals such as triclosan and triclocarbans, which are found in many personal care products, have been linked to potential health risks. The presence of these chemicals in everyday products undersccores the need for greater public health monitoring and regulation.

Recent developments also include new legislation aimed at removing potentially toxic chemicals from beauty products. This highlights the growing concern over chemical exposure through personal care items. This legislation seeks to increase transparency and safety in the cosmetics industry.

Research does have its limits. This research states that they don’t have more information on the kinds of tea. It is a small sample of people along with other limits.

After PFAS Learnings

We have a choice to learn and make healthier choices. Perhaps homegrown and home cooked meals is a wise decision to lessen the exposure to PFAS and other toxins? Many store bought whole foods may be wrapped or exposed to PFAS (and the like). Best we do not worry but do the best we can? Worry creates tension and holds elimination in check. Support our detoxifying pathways is also a choice.  There are several ways to look at this – from drinking clean water to a wholesome lifestyle from what we eat to what we move.

On that note, use this blog to bring your attention to your health. What is healthy for you and your lifestyle?

Best of health,

Champion for your better health…

Before the age of 20, it never dawned on me that what I chose to put in my mouth would have such a dramatic effect on my well being.
On my path of discovery, I learned that our eating choices directly affected how much energy we have first thing in the morning or that it would build our immune system strength during flu season. Part of it was coming to understand how gentle nutritional cleansing directly helped overcome my health challenges. People keep telling me how beautiful my skin is or how I look younger.
As my studies continued, it became obvious that there is an intrinsic connection between the mind, body, and spirit which directly affects our health and happiness. Omegas are another critical piece of the wellness puzzle. The Auum omegas alone turned on some switches in my brain in just one day.
I have developed a deep appreciation for the wonderful miracle workers our bodies are in the recovery process.  Our bodies have natural intelligence.  I am passionate to share the connection between nutrition and wellness in my practice and my presentations.
